Youth Choir Wednesday Devotion: “Above All”

This is one of a series of devotions written for 2008 Youth Choir Tour.  Here is the devotion written for today.

”Above All” by Michael W. Smith

Above all powers above all kings
Above all nature and all created things
Above all wisdom and all the ways of man
You were here before the world began

Above all kingdoms above all thrones
Above all wonders the world has ever known
Above all wealth and treasures of the earth
There’s no way to measure what You’re worth

Crucified laid behind the stone
You lived to die rejected and alone
Like a Rose trampled on the ground
You took the fall and thought of me
Above all

Have you ever felt like you were on top of the world? Everything was going your way and you were almost untouchable? It’s easy to feel that way sometimes.  Especially after some things like maybe a good grade on a test, getting the summer job you really wanted, the boyfriend you’ve been crushing on for weeks, and it’s definitely easy to feel this way when the summer starts or you just graduated high school.

Today we are all excited about going to the amusement park for the rides, roller coasters, and thrills of new heights and dare-devil stunts.  But I’m sure if we are honest with ourselves there is at least a small part of us that is afraid of the loopty-loop surprises and fast drops from stories high.  Once the ride is done and we realize we survived the danger, the excitement begins again with the thinking that we are untouchable.

It is in those moments when we must rely on God most.

“I will always show you where to go. I’ll give you a full life in the emptiest of places – Firm muscles, strong bones. You’ll be like a well-watered garden, a gurgling spring that never runs dry.”- Isaiah 58:11 (The Message/Remix)

In the moments where we seem on top of the world is the time when it can be easiest to fall.  But remember that God IS our strength.  Without him true happiness and success are not possible.  The untouchable feeling means nothing unless you have Christ holding you up and standing by your side.
